For my final performance I chose to read a passage from the chapter “Watchman, What of the Night?” from Djuna Barnes’ novel Nightwood. The passage is a conversation between Dr. O’Connor and Nora, who has just arrived at the Doctor’s apartment and requested that he tell her all he knows of the night, so that she may better understand the long night-wanderings of her lover Robin. I find O’Connor’s reflections on the nature of the night, sleep, and dreams, and how they relate to a person’s psyche, to be particularly insightful and rather poetic at times.
I also recorded a few poems by Pablo Neruda. (Sorry Dr. K — too poor to buy you a present instead… =) )
